A stalwart of Surf Life Saving has been lost

It is with great sadness that we confirm that Life Member and recently appointed club President John Martin MBE, Event Director of ILS, has passed away. He lost his fight against cancer and died peacefully at the age of 67, surrounded by his wife and family.
John’s devotion to Surf Life Saving will live on for years. Our thoughts are with his family.

Appointment of Club President – John Martin MBE

As you will be aware just before COVID we lost our Club President, David Pascoe MBE, who was our president for over 30 years.
Following David’s passing the committee set out to seek a new president and during those initial discussions John Martin MBE was put forward.

In the history of the club, we have only had one President, the role is an honorary position of a well-respected person who supports the club with ceremonial duties, honours, presentations and fundraising.

I am very please to write that in April 2024 the club committee unanimously agreed to ask John Martin MBE to become the Portreath Surf Life Saving Club’s 2nd President, which he gladly accepted.

When Club Chairman David Green wrote to John asking him to become President, he replied:Β β€˜Well what an honour to be invited to take up the role of President of Portreath Surf Life Saving Club. When I read your letter it brought a big tear to my eye. But it does mean so much that the Committee feels that even in the current circumstances it could be a good thing to ask me. I am truly feeling humble in being asked’.

As someone who joined the club as a teenager, worked tirelessly for surf life saving in Great Britain, Europe and the World and gone on to be one of the most respected figures in International Lifesaving, we could not ask for a better, more respected ambassador to be our President.

Nipper Power!

AMAZING Evening last night by the GREEN ARMY, our Nippers did a sponsored swim at Redruth Pool, swam 1000s of lengths, raised over Β£2000, still being counted. This means our Nipper section we be able to buy much needed new Nipper & Transition Boards. Well done to all the Nippers, Organisers, Coaches & Helpers πŸ’šπŸ€πŸ–€πŸ€πŸ’š

Our Youth, Open and Masters were in action on 21st April. Huge congratulations to all the athletes that took part over the weekend, to the amazing voluntary support from helpers and time keepers and for all the work that went into getting our great team ready to race.

“I have witnessed pure grit and determination by everybody all weekend and I am very proud to be apart of such an amazing club” – Strong words from Club Captain James Carpenter.

Cornish Stillwater Championships 2024

We had a fantastic weekend of racing at the Cornish Nippers Champs at Penzance in March. We took our 73 strong team and placed 4th overall, up from 9th last year, this is amazing!! All the hard work and commitment is really showing, all of the coaches are really proud of everyone’s achievements.
We had many competitors placing in the top ten, which with the numbers of entries (up to 80 per age group!) this is no mean feat!
A special shout out to all those that stepped up and raced for the first time, especially our 8s, you were all fab!
