Club Report in Portreath Tram

Portreath SLSC end of season report 2016.

Once again Portreath SLSC has had a busy summer season with many events taking place, where most of the members are involved either as competitors, team managers, officials, referees and event manager and safety crews.

We had a round of the Cornish Surf league at Portreath early in the summer, this is a selection process for a place in the Cornwall Team and then for the England Team, with selection being made for the GB Team.

With the World Championships taking place in Holland in September the GB Trial took place at Portreath followed by the Cornwall v Devon event, with Cornwall winning the Youth and the Open age groups.

Cornish Championships took place at Holywell Bay with Portreath winning the Open and the Youth taking 2nd place, Portreath won the overall aggregate for the Competition.

National Age Group Championships took place at Exmouth , with the Youth Team taking 1st place, Masters 7th Place and Nippers 10th.

Keia Wardman and Anya Piotrowicz were selected to represent GB at the Sanyo Cup in Japan.

The open Senior National took place at Portreath with very testing conditions. On the Friday the England v Wales event took place with England winning the Youth and Senior event. This was followed by the exciting knock out Golden Flag event being won by our own Anya Piotrowicz and Charlie Haynes. The following 2 days, Clubs competed for the Open Title which was once again won by Portreath SLSC.

In September 5 members were selected to represent GB at the World Championships – James Carpenter (Youth), Mesha Wardman, George Haynes, Charlie Haynes and Lewis Rosewell (Senior Team). The GB Youth Team came7th overall and the GB Senior Team came 13th with some great results from our Portreath Competitors; George and Charlie, 4th in the Board Rescue, George 1st in the Line Throw and Charlie 5th in the Board Race.

The Club Team events followed the National events with Portreath SLSC being placed 16th overall – The Surf Boat came 3rd in the Masters and 6th in the Open, Charlotte Savage won Bronze Medal in the ladies Masters ski, the men’s Ocean Relay Team came 5th and George and Charlie won silver medal in the Men’s Board Rescue Event only beaten by Australia’s top SLS Club. Team Sponsored by Atlantic Cafe, Portreath and Cornish Granite Sports.

These results are due to the huge amount of time put in by the Club Coaches and the many hours the members spend training. This training keeps our members fit and gives them the surf skills to become Lifeguards, with 10 of our members working as Professional Lifeguards for the RNLI. The club has approximately 120 Nippers aged 6 – 13 with our senior members volunteering to keep the Nipper and Youth sessions safe.
