Beach Safety

Portreath Surf Patrol

Portreath SLSCMembers of Portreath Life Saving Club voluntary patrol the surf & beach every weekend throughout the summer months. Members train all winter, in preparation for the following season.
Our members are qualified to the highest standards set by the Surf Life Saving Association of GB, and Portreath SLSC have a close working relationship with the professional Lifeguard services employed by Kerrier Council, many of who are trained by the club itself.

Top  tips when at the beach

  • Always swim or surf at a beach patrolled by lifesavers or lifeguards.
  • Swim between the red and yellow flags. They mark the safest areas to swim.
  • Avoid swimming alone or unsupervised.
  • Read the signs. If a beach is closed, don't swim there.
  • If you are unsure of the surf conditions ask a lifeguard or lifesaver.
  • Don't swim directly after a meal.
  • Don't swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Don't run or dive in the water, always check the conditions, they might have changed.
  • If you get in trouble in the water, don't panic, raise one arm up and float until help arrives.
  • Float with a rip current or undertow, don't swim against it.

FlagFor your safety, learn the flags that can be seen on every patroled beach in the UK, they will indicate the safe bathing area or dangers on your beach:
