Jenna brings home £1,000
Palm Island
PORTREATH canoeist and surf ski paddler Jenna Hawkey has brought home £1,000 prize money after gaining fourth place in an international race in Dubai.
The 24km race attracted 130 of the best flat-water and surf paddlers from across the globe.
Jenna, 22, lined up against Olympic canoeists and finished just 4mins behind Olympic champion Tim Brabants.

"I beat a lot of boys, including the current British canoe marathon champion, which makes up for not getting a top three spot," said Jenna.

The course ran between two of the famous man-made Palm islands in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Dubai.

"Despite horrendous blisters on my hands and really sore shoulders, it was one of the most exciting things I've done."
She was not even seeded in the top 10 women prior to the event but Jenna has now been invited to Hawaii for the legendary 35mile Molokai race, as well as events in Manhattan and Guadeloupe.

"The world circuit for long-distance racing is massive. I'm going to get to as many of these events as I can afford but it will be difficult as much of the series clashes with the flat-water racing season."

Jenna started paddling surf skis with Portreath Surf Life Saving Club when she was 15, but transferred to flat-water sprint racing 18 months ago after being selected to race at the world canoeing championships in the GB women's K4 (kayak fours).

She is now training with the GB canoeing team in Windsor to pursue her goal of winning a medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Jenna hopes to be selected for the GB surf life saving team that will travel to South Africa for the Six National Cup in February.
